Pence for President

Pence for President

Does the headline grab you?  I am the former chairman of the Democratic Party in the State of Indiana and I support Mike Pence to be the next President of the United States.  Let me be clear, I want that to happen now.

Most of my Democratic friends are probably just about to stop reading so let me keep them engaged by saying what I believe is at stake here. Our Democracy.  Say what you want about how bad a President Mike Pence would be and I will almost certainly agree with about every point you make.  But I will take stupid adherence to ideology over what we have now.  I will take incompetent executive decision making over what we have now.  I will take wear it on your sleeve overt religiosity over what we have now.  I will take smarmy 1950’s rose colored glass wearing covered bridge worshiping backwardness over what we have now.  I will take two steps back on health care rather than what we have now.

What we have now is a clear and present danger to everything that has come before us and the work that has been going on to make this a more perfect union.

Let me ask a few questions.  Do you for one minute think that Mike Pence would have picked a fight with the widow of a dead soldier before the soldier was even laid to rest?  Do you think Mike Pence would be someone who said after Charlottesville that there were fine people on both sides of the debate?  Do you think Mike Pence would call anyone and everyone who criticized him a name?  Do you think Mike Pence would refuse to enforce sanctions imposed upon Russia by a veto proof majority in Congress?  Do you think Mike Pence would have pardoned Joe Arpaio for crimes committed where Arpaio violated Americans constitutional rights?   Do you think Mike Pence would have fired James Comey to try to stop an investigation of his campaign? Do you think Mike Pence would engage in a frontal assault on the First Amendment by repeatedly accusing the media of engaging in fake news? Do you think Mike Pence would have made Steve Bannon his ally?

Now I know that all of the preceding questions are yes by implication because he has stood by while his boss has done all of those things.  And I believe that he is morally responsible for not stopping this behavior and in fact endorsing it.  In judging him, I judge him harshly for all of this.  But the fact is he would not have done it himself and won’t do similar things if Trump leaves the scene before his first term ends.

Those of us in Indiana do indeed know Mike Pence.  We have known for a long time he is a show horse and not a work horse.  We have known he is not erudite.  We know he is full of shit. We thought we knew he was principled.  But this is not a Hobson’s choice.  There are not two equally bad choices.  One is awful and one is catastrophic.

The catastrophe is before us.  Mike Pence for President! (until 2020 or sooner if there is another choice.)
